Why do we need omega-3s?

Fish oils from supplementation or food have been found to support various systems of the body—including cognitive function, as well as cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, eye, and immune health (National Institutes of Health. Omega-3 fatty acids fact sheet). While 61.3% of people in the US regularly eat fish, some people still may not meet omega-3 recommendations (Papanikolaou Y et al. Nutr J. 2014;13:31).

And the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, as found in fish oil, are conditionally essential, meaning that while the body can make some of them, it’s likely not enough to reach the recommended amount.
